Y5 Spring Term Newsletter

Homework for 10th Jan. In on 14th Jan

Spellings = apostrophes for possession Given on 7th Jan: To be tested 14th Jan.

Well done to all those children who practised the handwriting homework over Xmas.  You have all been given 10 House Points for your efforts and resilience.

Thank you for doing this.

Mrs A.

Our first piece of English writing this Spring term will be entitled,

'My Inspiration'.

Who - or what - inspires you?

Are you inspired by famous celebrities, or by someone in your family?

Are you impressed enough by someone local to regard them as an inspiration, or someone far, far back in history?

Perhaps it isn't a person, but a place - a beach, a palace, a den at the bottom of your garden?

Perhaps it's a time in history, or a skill such as roller skating, or cake decorating.

Perhaps it's a song, a TV programme or a video game.

Who, or what ever this inspiration may be, you need to be able to express why it affects you, and what influence it has had on your life.

Before you come back to school, have a think about who or what 'My Inspiration' could be.

You will need to develop your ideas in class, so the more you think about it beforehand, the better your ideas will be.

SUSPENSE WRITING: ESME

The empty void of space became a blue, green and white sphere. There was a gleaming white claw that had a young lady attached to it. Her name was Dr Stone. She had been calmly studying Earth’s enchanting atmosphere and taking mesmerizing pictures to send back to NASA. She was wearing a pearly white space suit with a dark misty visor to protect her from the burning, bright sun that was incredibly powerful. But eventually, as the claw brought her back round, all she could see was the vast darkness of space.

The long, thin, white, metallic arm, to which doctor stone was attached, suddenly jerked. Rapidly, Dr Stone turned her head, only to see … a satellite, shooting towards her at a crazy speed, whizzing around dizzyingly almost as if it meant harm.

“MISSION ABORT, I REPEAT, MISSION ABORT.”

She froze. Her heart froze. Everything in her froze. But everything outside kept going… She was scared … no worried… no petrified. When she finally found her voice again, she stammered,

“Dr Stone requesting faster transport to bay area.”

No reply! She tried again. Deadly silence… Houston could not hear her!

SMASH! The station had been hit.

CRACK! Space junk started hitting the ship, causing Dr Stone’s arm to spin viciously around. The ship could not take it.

“MAN DOWN!”

Behind them, the third member had been hit by space junk. Kowalski left.

“Aarrgghh!” screamed Dr Stone. The claw arm shot off. She spun, and spun and spun and did not stop spinning.

“Dr Stone, detach, I repeat, detach!” cried Dr Kowalski

Detach, her brain told her. She trembled. She shivered. She had to detach. With all her might she wrenched open the clips and …

… was thrown into space.

Y5 Autumn Term Newsletter

Spellings list for 10th Sept. Test on 17th Sept

We began our topic by creating our own planets

First week back - information for parents.

Homework and spellings will be put up on this page every week, as will copies of letters sent to parents, upcoming events and an update about Celebration Assembly.

Homework is given out on Thursday and is expected in - completed - on the following Monday.  Homework consists of English AND Maths, spellings, tables and reading.

Spellings are given out on Mondays, tested the following Monday, and any child who does not achieve 80% in the test will be given extra support during my lunch hour to help them with their learning.

Times Tables will be tested every Wednesday.  There are 60 questions to complete in 10 minutes.  Tables are taught as part of maths lessons, daily.  Children in Y5 should already have achieved Stage 10, before they come into the classroom.  I expect them to move up a minimum of 2 stages per term, until they have reached Stage 11.

Reading journals are expected in school every day.  On Monday they should be handed in, fully completed, for the previous week.  This comprises: date, comment, no. of days read as a running total.  Any child who is experiencing difficulty in daily reading at home, and completing their journal, will be given extra support during my lunch hour.

As with every teacher in the school, I am always delighted to meet up and talk to you.  Please keep me informed (by using the home/school book, or by phoning the school) about anything that you feel may impact upon your child's learning.  This could include playground issues, the death of a pet or family member, anxiety about various subjects in school, or the misplacing of kit/school uniform.

PLEASE NOTE:  ALL CHILDREN NOW HAVE INDIVIDUAL LOCKERS IN WHICH TO PLACE THEIR BELONGINGS.  THE DIMENSIONS ARE: 50cm x 42cm x 30cm.

This means that there will not be enough room for a rucksack!  There is enough room for a normal school book-bag and a drawstring PE kit, but very little else.  Please  - do not send your child in to school with over large bags.  (All children were told about these lockers and which bags they need to bring, on the 'Meet the Teacher' Day at the beginning of July, last term.)

There will be a chance for teachers and parents to meet up early in the term (please see dates below) and discuss any issues that you feel we need to know about, and may not have picked up from previous teachers.

Autumn Term:

September -

5th - All children in school - with kit. (Please note:  Dimensions of lockers do NOT allow for rucksacks.  All children were reminded to bring PE kit in to school in drawstring bags, during their 'Meet the Teacher' day last July.)

14th - SuperHero day

15th - Grand Opening of newly furbished school.

20th - Individual school photos
