Music

Purpose of study

We want all our children to be creative and inspired by music. We aim for them to know and appreciate a variety of music styles. We want them to have experienced playing instruments and to develop the skills and confidence to compose their own music. We want children to learn and understanding the knowledge and skills required to make music. Our curriculum emphasizes the importance of both singing and playing instruments.

Aims

Our curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all children:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • learn to sing and use their voices, learn an instrument, to create and compose music on their own and with others, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.
  • Learn the knowledge and skills behind music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation.

Peripatetic Music Tuition

Our school can facilitate the specific tuition of a musical instrument in separate, in school lessons, by visiting peripatetic teachers. These lessons are optional and are paid for parents. Lessons can be organised and taught by Hampshire Music Service or if a child wishes to learn more contemporary music, we can organise lessons with Rocksteady. They teach children guitar, drums and keyboards for the purpose of playing in a band. More information on these lessons can be obtained from the school office. All lessons must be paid for in advance.
