French
Purpose of study
Learning French enables children to grow a curiosity and understanding of the country nearest to the UK. It enables children to recognise and understand that we live in a global society and that mastering different languages enables us to access the world. The curriculum aims for children to understand, speak and write the practical basics of French. Children are expected to converse in French by responding to simple questions.
Aims
Our curriculum for French aims to ensure that all children:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving accuracy with pronunciation and intonation.
- can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using a variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
